Life and work Adriaan or Aad van der Plas was a son of Johannes Cornelis Marie van der Plas and Catharina Wilhelmina Maria Wensing. According to Van der Plas himself, he had his artistic talent from mother's side, [2] her father was a shopkeeper and craftsman and brother Lucas was a sculptor. Van der Plas was educated at the Academy of Visual Arts and Technical Sciences (1919-1923) in Rotterdam, as a student of Alexander van Maasdijk and Ferdinand Oldewelt. In 1922 he won a medal for drawing from human nudity. He received three Royal Grants for Painting (1923-1925) and made study trips through Germany, Austria, France and Italy during those years. [3] Van der Plas received graphics lessons from Antoon Derkzen van Angeren. Until 1930 he was a teacher at the evening trade drawing school in Rotterdam. In 1931-1932 he was one of the former students of Van Maasdijk, along with his uncle Lucas Wensing, Hendrik Chabot, Herman Bieling and Leendert Bolle, among others, who contributed to the funerary monument of their teacher. Van der Plas painted, watercolors and drew portraits, figures and religious scenes in a naturalistic style, and made etchings, lithographs, wood engravings, printed fabrics, murals, stained-glass windows and sculptures. He was a member of the Rotterdam Artists 'Society and the General Catholic Artists' Association. In 1936 he won the Virgilius Prize with his painting 'De Gekruisigde' and in 1969 he received the Penning van de Leuve. The artist lived in Rotterdam and from 1932 in Hillegersberg, where Adriaan van der Plaslaan was named after him in 2014. [5] He was nursed the last year of his life in Kerkrade, where he died in 1974. [6] He was buried in the Crooswijk General Cemetery. (Wikipedia)
