After growing up in Harlem and having lived in many countries (Mexico, Japan, Spain and Sweden, the 'Master of Collage' established himself in the Netherlands in 1961. After living in Amsterdam for years, he became fascinated by the landscape. located in Schagen in the head of North Holland. Music (classical as well as jazz and pop) and the Dutch landscape form the climate in which his work - abstract expressionism - arises. Middleton has taught at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem and at the Royal Academy in Den Bosch. Sam Middleton can be called the first modern African American artist in the Low Countries.
