The Amsterdam painter Jan Sierhuis, born on December 21, 1928, worked from 1946 to 1948 and from 1953 to 1956 at the State Academy of Visual Arts in Amsterdam, where he was taught by Jan Wiegers, among others. He then worked for a year at the Higher Institute of Antwerp under Opsomer's direction. This was in the period from 1957 to 1958. He was successively a member of De Independents, De Keerkring, and the Dutch Circle of Draftsmen. His travels took him to France, Spain, Scandinavia, Cuba, Mexico, the United States, Germany, Morocco and England. In 1956 he was awarded the Therese van Duyl-Schwartz Prize; a year later he received the shared Mr. Westendorpprijs, a Royal grant. In 1987 he received the Jeanne Oosting prize for painting. He also became an Officer in the Order of Oranje-Nassau in 2002. Jan Sierhuis taught at Ateliers '63 in Haarlem in 1968, and was a supervisor at Psychoplis (Free Academy) in The Hague from 1970 to 1979. From the years 1983/1984 Jan Sierhuis was a teacher at the Rietveld and Rijks Academy in Amsterdam.
