Arie Kater. Oil on linen. 65x90cm. "Femme and dressing gown rouge"

Arie Kater (Amsterdam, May 17, 1922 - there, December 24, 1977) was a Dutch painter. During the Second World War, he worked in the graphics sector during the day. He also painted in the evenings at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. After the war he initially made a name for himself as an illustrator, but he soon became a much sought-after portrait painter. His most famous portraits are those of the actor Ko van Dijk, Prime Minister Cals and the art collector Chr. P. van Eeghen. He also painted many self-portraits and female nudes, often in combination with each other. In 1952 he received the Royal Grant for Painting. Galerie Spiegeling Art in Amsterdam has work by Arie Kater in its collection and his work has also been purchased for the collection of Museum Henriette Polak in Zutphen.

Granddaughter Nova van Dijk made a documentary in 2009 about her grandfather, his surrender to king alcohol and his time: Arie Kater - The hangover will come later.
