Gerard Sluijter 1933. Oil on canvas. 80x100cm

Gerardus Hermanus Johannes Sluijter (Gerard Sluyter), Amsterdam 1901-1985, was a renowned artist in a relatively small circle, a well-known figure in the local art world. Mostly self-taught, he went his own way. He lived like the classical bohemian and worked from a practical, socialist-minded vision of life that saw man as part of the big picture. The work still in existence bears witness to this. Portraits in a sometimes somewhat naive-looking, tranquil style, with all attention for the soul of the person portrayed. Seascapes and rocks that express the greatness of nature, cityscapes with an almost surreal oppression. His work was frequently exhibited at the time and is included in various collections, many of his commissioned portraits are in private collection. We, his family, want to give interested parties the opportunity to get acquainted with the work of a special artist via this website.
